petty bitch moment, but of all the many many many disco elysium fandomisms I despise, kim-as-saviour is one of the interpretations that winds me up the most. he does not save harry. he has no interest in saving harry. it is neither his job nor his personal inclination to save harry. there is no version of events in which harry is 'saved' by the end because the ENTIRE THESIS of his arc, upward or downward, is that he is the only one who can change his own behaviour. A single rpg's worth of straight and narrow neither absolves him of his past nor assures him of a better future, and more to the point, harry is the only person narrativising his actions that way.

the thing kim does that has the potential to change harry's habits, depending on the way you-as-harry choose to react, is offer an opportunity for him to scrap his existing self-narrative and explore a relationship based on a different pattern of behaviour. blowing that internal process up and projecting it onto kim, like kim is special in exactly the right way to transform harry at the moment he needs it most, is exactly the type of pathological, histrionic view of others that typifies harry's past relationships. it's the reason he's still rolling around in self indulgent masochism over Dora. It has very little to do with who she was as a person, it's all about the quasi mythological madonna/whore figure he's turned her into as a supporting character in his own fiction. and that's what I keep seeing fandom interpretation do to kim!!!

tbc I'm not talking about explorations of how any given harry might see kim. I don't care about that, play with the material, mine your own neuroses, go nuts. I'm talking about the strain of fandom brain that narratively casts kim as a healing figure, a vessel of divine intervention, a uniquely patient and forgiving soul, the miracle that brings harry back from the brink. it's an insanely unhealthy and presumptuous way to view relationships, but I'm not even here to give a shit about that! what really annoys me is that it runs entirely counter to one of the core points made by the game itself: that kim is just some guy. harry has never been helpless to change under his own power. you can get kim shot and still end the game resolved to get your shit together!!!

like how is anyone playing the game and then turning around and saying hey I have a great idea, what if all of harry's delusions were justified. I swear to god it feels like transmasc jesse pinkman level fanon in here sometimes.

Shigure's relationship with Kyo drives me crazy. he doesn't hate Kyo in the slightest - in fact, he pities Kyo, and not in the condescending "oh you poor little boy, cursed to be a horrible, disgusting monster" sort of way that everyone else does. Shigure pities Kyo for the reason he should be pitied: he's just a kid caught up in a system so inhumane it can't possibly be survived without some seriously unhealthy coping mechanisms.

and it drives me crazy because - listen, Shigure is the only zodiac member who's emotionally aware enough to see the other zodiac members as exactly what they are. he knows Yuki is a severely traumatized kid who projects all of his self-hatred on a single convenient target. he knows Akito is really a scared little girl with a raging god complex (literally) and no concept of a healthy relationship. and he knows Kyo is a regular-ass human being who doesn't deserve to be locked up for the rest of his life just because some arbitrary system says so. he KNOWS it's stupid. he KNOWS it's ridiculous and unfair. and he has to share a house with Kyo knowing that Kyo is living with a sword over his head, hating himself and hating others in perfect tandem because he has no other way of coping with the insane amounts of negativity he's had to deal with his entire life.

but the thing about Shigure is that he KNOWS all of this, and the same time he doesn't really CARE. he feels sorry for Kyo, but an apathetic sort of pity, a disinterested "this is how it is. such a shame." sort of pity. in some ways he's worse than the other zodiacs because he DOES see Kyo as a person, someone he likes being around even, but he still considers Kyo below his attention because all his focus is on Akito and breaking the curse. and sure, once the curse is broken Kyo will theoretically be set free with the rest of them, but that's more of a coincidental side effect than anything. despite being in a much more dangerous and precarious mental space AND comfortably in Shigure's reach, Kyo is about as much a priority for Shigure as Ritsu or Momiji.

and it drives me CRAZY because i think Shigure does start actively caring about Kyo as the series goes on, but it's hard to tell when that happens and to what extent. when Kazuma told Shigure he planned to reveal Kyo's true form and Shigure said he was going too far - whose sake was it for? was Shigure trying to protect Kyo, who would be hideously traumatized/emotionally scarred by such a cruel betrayal? was he trying to protect Kyo and Tohru's relationship, which was still formulating and might, under such severe testing, ultimately end up damaged beyond repair? was he only trying to protect Tohru, who wasn't ready to be burdened by such a horrible aspect of the curse so soon, or perhaps simply didn't deserve it? or was it all for the sake of himself, trying to protect his still-forming plans of using Tohru's positive effect on the Sohmas to break the curse?

Shigure cares about Kyo, but they're not close and Kyo clearly isn't a priority. he treats Kyo like a person - offering him genuine advice, teasing him like he teases anyone else, even speaking up on his behalf once or twice - and yet he's too entrenched in the long game to spare much active interest in Kyo. for a very long time, he doesn't care about Kyo the way he cares about Yuki or Tohru, and it's never made clear when exactly that changed. and the thing that gets me about this whole situation is that right from the start, Shigure is in a position where he can meet Kyo at his level - as equals, just one human being to another - but he doesn't, because Shigure is a chessmaster, Shigure is someone who observes and calculates, Shigure never steps in unless one of his chess pieces makes a wrong move and he absolutely has to.

it drives me crazy. Shigure drives me crazy. this series drives me so so crazy.

With enough focus and while directing all her attention to the rune under her finger, she could first feel a feather's soft, smooth parts, which, after a gentle pulse, morphed into the sensation of a thin, metal needle. She could even gently slide her finger over it and feel the needle's point, sensing just how sharp it might be.

“Feels really accurate,” Alyn said as she opened her eyes, nearly losing the sensation from the rune as her focus drifted. “That’s amazing.”

It was just that moment when Alyn noticed the marks on his hand, and her gaze shifted briefly to the tiny dark spots on the parchment that she hadn't paid attention to earlier. “Your hands…” she said softly. ・・・

・・・ Ominis didn’t speak for quite a while. Alyn kept a close eye on his frowning face and the way his hands clenched around the wand. The silence allowed her to hear how he let out a slow sigh after a few short breaths when he chose not to speak.

if syd and claire were to swap places in the show, i know i wouldn't see as much pushback and discourse surrounding her (claire's) potential relationship with carmy. people have shipped other non-confirmed couples for far less.

I’m kind of baffled about the state of dawntrail discussions having two parties in regards to Living Memory, one being “shutting it down is amoral” and the other being “it’s moral and not at all like what Emet-Selch wanted to do with us”. It’s like a lot of people refuse to engage with the narrative from any other perspective other than their own when the game essentially hits you over the head with the message.

Yes, the existence of Living Memory is unsutainable and amoral and, frankly, pointless – you can make the very valid argument that the people there were just AI chatbots trained on the memories of a given individual, leeching off of the souls of others, their existence demanding the genocide of the entire universe in the end. I agree, in our eyes, Living Memory is an affront to life, sure!

Nobody seems to talk about that this is the exact same perspective Emet-Selch had about us, or when mentioned, people say that it isn’t the same. It is? He very explicitly tells us that the people living on the shards today are pale imitations to what he considered to be life, and thus shutting it down and trying to undo his mistake IS the solution (he is very much like Solas from DA in this regard), because in his eyes there’s nothing to lose but everything to gain. Emet-Selch saw us in the same light we see the people of Living Memory, and the game is painfully unsubtle in drawing this parallel. Even with the differences (we are not recreated memories but actual souls being reborn from the aetherial sea, etc-etc), the game WANTS you to make this connection between Emet and what we do. It is quite literally the point!

Yes, Living Memory has to be shut down because its biggest drawback is that it’s unsustainable and would continue to destroy what we deem to be lives. It is also arguably an affront to what we consider life and its natural end (directly opposing the message of Endwalker). The Endless aren’t even too hung up about this shutdown, bar Sphene. Shutting down Living Memory is necessary.

But you can’t say it was morally good and unquestionable if you can’t give Emet’s views the same grace. In the end, both his plans (and the Ascians at large, frankly) and Living Memory had to be stopped because that means survival for us, but to divorce the two narratives to maintain the WoL and co.’s moral superiority is disingenuous and does the story a disservice.
